- That's a little extreme. Try tapping on the disk drive housing.
- I've encountered several drives with this "stiction" problem, and
- have always managed to get them spinning again. One needed just a
- tap with my fingertip, although many need a couple of whacks with
- a screwdriver handle. You can do this with the power on, and if
- you succeed you'll hear the drive spin up.

- Another method is to remove the drive with the machine and give
- it a quick twist of the wrist (around the disk's axis). This
- will usually break it free, but you'll have to reinstall the
- drive before you know whether it worked.

- Once you get the drive going, you might consider taking a full
- backup, which makes life easier when you decide to replace the
- drive (which you should do before it dies completely).
